Feldman's Deli

Sloppy Joe, Best new Sandwich in SLC

View from the counter where I ate

Exterior of Feldman's Deli.  Not open Sunday or Monday
Menu.  The Sloppy Joe could easily feed two people.  It's huge

My new favorite sandwich here in SLC, is now the "Sloppy Joe" at the new Feldman's Deli on the NE Corner of 20th East and 2700 South.  The sandwich is made of corned beef, pastrami, thousand island and cole slaw.  It is juicy and delicious and a bit hard to eat.  The picture here doesn't do it justice.  Believe me, it is fantastic and rivals anything at Carnegie Deli in NYC.  Eating it reminds me of those Carl's Jr. ads where stuff is dripping out all over the place.  It is amazing.  The potato salad was great as well.  The people are friendly and fun to be with.  I can't wait to go back.

New Longhorn Steakhouse on Fort Union

We were invited to the pre-opening complimentary lunch at the new Longhorn Steakhouse on Fort Union Blvd., across the street to the North from the Family Center where the Marie Callendar's used to be.  The interior is warm and cozy and the employees were well trained and polite.  Our cute server Marilyn was excellent, relaxed, well trained and fun to be around.  We split the $9.00 shrimp and lobster dip pictured here.  Gigi ordered the Bourbon Glazed Salmon over rice with veggies ($12.99) and I got the 1/2 Baby Back with a baked potato loaded and a side salad. ($11.49).  All of the food was excellent.  My ribs were very tender and delicious, Gigi's Salmon was cooked perfectly, not over-cooked which is easy to do.

The dinner menu ranges from approximately $12 to $28.  I found it interesting to see the calories listed under each of the items on the menu.   Buyer beware.

A lot of new restaurants based on meat in the area, Dickie's and Sonny Bryan across the street and of course, Famous Dave's that has been there for a while.  I think Longhorn will do well.

Taqueria 27 1616 Foothill Drive

We loved the high end Mexican Food at Taqueria 27 today.  I had the Pork with one of the specialty Moles (Oaxacan).  I chose the basil rice and pinto bean sides ($12.50 including sides).  Dave had the Quesadilla with Pork ($10) and we split a Flan Dessert.  A couple of little comments:

They are thrifty guys.  Unlike most Mexican food restaurants, there isn't one chip or extra offered "gratis."  The plates are too small, the only napkins offered are cocktail napkins.  They brought us a bunch.  The interior is very clean and modern.  The waiters are trained and they have a huge selection of tequilas.  My food was fantastic.  It was perfectly cooked, not fatty and it was delicious.  Dave loved his as well.  The Quesadilla had a lot of cheese in it and it was prepared perfectly.  I think it's a great place and compares price-wise to Dodo or Porcupine.  Give it a shot.

Flora is great

We had enjoyed another trip to Flora today in Holladay.  I had the pork enchilada and it was outstanding.  Wade had the Burger and Gigi had the Turkey Sandwich.  They need some business.  You won't be disappointed

Another good meal at Flora

Have any of you noticed the new sign at the old Boulevard Restaurant?  Great chef, had the Shrimp Po Boy sandwich today.  Delicious.  Needs your support.  Holladay, Murray Holladay Road just east of Holladay Blvd. on the north side, across the street from Gepetto's.

Oh Mai approximately 6150 Highland Drive

Some family of the owners of Trang have opened up where Lettuce and Ladles used to operate just North of the Wendy's and Xcel on Highland Drive. I had a Bahn Mi Ribeye sandwich for under $6.00. I loved it, full of Thai flavors, herbs and lean meat. The bread was toasted and crispy and a little rough on the roof of my mouth. I was worried that this wouldn't be enough food so I ordered a bowl of the Pho which is a delicious brothy soup with light noodles, more beef along with sprouts, onion, basil and some kind of green pepper. Delicious and on its own would have been a great lunch. Others ordered the Honey Pork Sandwich and a similar bowl of soup. We also split a fresh spring roll which is pictured here with the sauce. Delicious. The operators are very nice, experienced and we will visit again soon.

Melty Way soft opening evening May 31

Melty way in the Family center just west of Chili's on Fort Union finally opened. I had the grilled cheese Rueben with the chipotle mayo dipping sauce. It was amazingly good. I also ordered the peanut butter cookie chocolate ice cream sandwich. Amazing. Give it a shot. Be sure to try the sauces.

Wasatch Broiler and Grill

We have been watching the remodel of the old Bahio's in the Union Heights shopping retail center on 13th East and about 77th South into a new Wasatch Broiler and Grill. It is a very tasteful and contemporary store with a nice upscale menu. Our group of five had the Calamari plate, the Blue Cheese Steak Salad, a Chicken Pasta dish, a New York Steak and I had the Beef Ribs and Chicken. The prices start at $10, but the portions are very generous and I could easily split a lunch meal there. Everyone loved their food. We chatted with the owner for a while. This is his fourth Wasatch venture and he is a pro. There is a good looking full bar there. I think you can guess which plate is which. I don't usually order beef ribs, but these were perfectly prepared and delicious. I think it is the same niche, feeling and pricing as nearby Porcupine and definitely a step or two food-wise above Iggy's.

Blue Lemon Cottonwood Heights Great Prices, Delicious Food

We had our fourth meal at Blue Lemon for dinner last night around 6:45 and chose the sole dish at $12.00 and the Short Rib Entree at $11.00. Both were delicious and perfectly cooked. Michael, one of the managers, noticed us and compted us a piece of chocolate cake. With tip, drinks and taxes, less than $30. It would have been more like $50 at Market Street. The short ribs were generous portions, maybe 8 ounces, perfectly tender and flavored. The sole was on top of some kind of mashed potato stuffing mix, also delicious. There were perfectly cooked small whole carrots along with polenta, I believe with the short ribs. Again, perfect. Also, spend a minute with their new fangled drink dispenser. There are dozens of choices and it's easy to work once you practice for a second. I had the cherry dasani again and I love it.

Blue Lemon NW corner of Highland Drive and Ft. Union

Blue Lemon opened their third location today. I had the Brisket on 7 Grain ($9) with sweet potato fries and a lighter eater had the Butternut Squash Soup with a roll ($4). Both were outstanding. The service was fast and efficient. It's a little more expensive than some of the bakery cafe's, but it's probably worth it. Nine out of ten.

Sonny Bryan Foothill

Sonny Bryan went in where Tuscano used to be around the corner from Red Butte Cafe in the Foothill Shopping Center. We ordered the Tuesday special, burnt tips along with a pulled beef sandwich, one soft drink and a water. We chose the okra and the baked beans as our two sides, total cost with tip, just under $20. The interior of the building is cozy and warm, the great smell of smoked barbeque wafting through the air. All and all, very good food. The smoked tips were tender, not mushy, still a little crisp with generous portions. We took about 1/2 of them home. The pulled beef sandwich was good, plenty of beef, but a little on the salty side for us. The beans aren't the sweet brand with jalapeno. They are more vinegar based and I thought a little one dimensional, but still pretty good. The okra pieces were fried and good and we dipped them into some of the sauces to check them out. You can check their website out at www.sonnybryans.com.

All and all, very good and we'll go back to try other things. It wasn't very busy there at 1:00. Give it a shot.
